Ken Susi - Is the AXE FX III good for live?
After a hiatus from posting, I'm back with a video discussing my years of experience with amps, digital amps, and other gear. I've been using the Axe-fx III on tour for two years and couldn't be happier with it. Watch as I demonstrate how I integrate it into my setup with visual and playing examples. Thank you for doing this. Very few people share live presets and applications. I run a similar setup and it works great!
Great vid. Question, why not just split the same signal chain to power amp with no impulse response? Saves on dsp i guess. Great tone!!!
I want the tone match to be in it's original state "album quality". The 2nd I can manipulate to sound great through a cab exclusively.

Yeah im diggin that direct signal to tha house.. I play through a stealth 3 6L6. I always put a small small low pass, (pultec eq curve) and I cut 4k buzz.
Good move. Honestly, the tone going to the cab is just as good but different

Awesome stuff, Ken, sounds amazing! I don't really do live playing but I like to know what's up, all the same, so I did find this video to be informative/useful. I didn't know that you had a YT channel and now I do 🤘🤘 I'll be checking out the backlog of videos for sure. I'm a metal guitarist, myself, and play what I suppose is Metalcore and some melodic death metal...been a AILD fan since I saw them at Cornerstone 2001 or 2002 (? I can't remember which year it was).... anyway, I was glad to see that you and Nick, have joined the band.

In fact I prefer the tone with the amp+cab, nastier in a good way.
You know whats crazy about the AxeFX? I ran this dual out split setup (FOH + Poweramp to cab) 10 years ago with an AxeFX Ultra :D The DSP load was around 40% and back then we only had a small car for transportation - I actually ended up with one AxeFX Ultra doing this setup for BOTH guitars in my band. With reverb I was at 95% DSP load but it worked! I had 4 patches (both distorted, both clean, 1 distorted + 1 clean and reverse) and I did the switching with my pedalboard because we didn't even have the space to bring a notebook to send midi commands. The power of the DSP back then was insane.

I’ve had the helix couple times. Can’t get any tones I like. Having the same problem with the fm3. It’s me not the gear. I just can’t get it. I’m just using it with studio monitors

Hell yeah,good unit. The get to a good power amp is a robust transformer. The 1U stuff does the job, but there's nothing like a 2150
If I could only find a 2150 for a decent price… always on the hunt for one.
Sounds really great! Seems useful to get the stage sound cut through a bit more.

Sick tone bro. Please make that preset available to buy or something. It’s awesome. I’ve been looking for a live solution for a while. I have a FM9 but I can look for a workaround for the tone matching thing

@@LordofTheRigsTrue but the tone match is doing a lot to help get it spot on vs. copying the amp settings and adding a cab block or IR. I don’t know what percentage of tone is actually amp vs. cab mathematically, but I’d say speaker makes a lot more of the final tone than the amp does.

Both patches sound great! Tone matching on the axe is something a lot of people overlook.

It’s essentially similar to doing a QC capture or Kemper profile of a specific sound. The key is to start with a similar amp and have good stems to work with.
These riffs and music hasn't stood the test of time for sure.

You should ask The most successful touring act in the World: Metallica. They've used Fractal for at least 3 years. Digital is far superior to Analog tube amp(s) in every capacity. Every Capacity. How this conversation: "are fractals good for live use and touring versus real amps" is even a question in 2024 is staggering to me. There are no redeeming qualities for analog amps at this point. Digital is superior. End of story.
Meshuggah and Garbage toured with the old Pod Pro racks well before Metallica started using Fractal stuff. Meshuggah later used the Line6 Vetta amps as well.
I have some holy grail amps but I am planning on making the shift to Axe FX eventually. Ive never used one but yea it seems like a no brainer at this point.
They are both really great. You can't beat a ream amp, but digital has come a long way. Both are great

While there is nothing like pushing air with a tube amp. , I honestly will never change back from my kemper. Only regret that I have is that I didn't profile my rig before. I sold everything but being able to automate that thing. Go direct to front of house and in ear Monitors is absolutely A. Game changer, I'll never look back
